Gail received a scholarship to support her move from regional SA.
Gail Brennan is a proud Ngarrindjeri and Adnyamathanha woman. She has wanted to be a lawyer since she was 12 years old and in 2016 began studying a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice.
Gail is passionate about making a difference in the community and by achieving her law degree she is looking forward to giving a voice to Indigenous Australians. However, she has faced a range of financial and logistical challenges that have made it difficult for her to focus on her studies.
Growing up in the Murraylands in regional South Australia, Gail spent the first two years of her degree commuting from her hometown to attend university each day. The lengthy travel time each day made it difficult for Gail to spend the time she needed on her course work.
Gail applied for an Indigenous scholarship to relieve her financial pressures, including the money she needed to make the move to Adelaide to significantly reduce her travel time to attend lectures. Gail also received support to purchase a laptop, textbooks and help with every day living costs.

Gail says, ‘Having support from the University’s donors means that I can pour myself into my studies and keep my degree as a priority. I am very thankful to have this support, it allows me to strive for my personal and professional goals.’
‘A lot of different opportunities have been opened up to me by attending university. I am an active mentor in the Inspire Mentor Program, which I find rewarding because I am in a position to inspire others to attend university. I also work at the University as a student ambassador and a law tutor within the Yunggorendi Student Engagement team.’
Flinders Indigenous Scholarships provide grants of up to $5,000 to make a real difference to the lives of Indigenous students. The funds help students to meet study related costs including essential study resources, textbooks, accommodation and daily travel.
However, we need your support to enable Indigenous students like Gail take control of their present, develop goals for the future, and make a difference for generations to come.
