I am studying the Bachelor of Sport, Health and Physical Activity (Outdoor Education). This degree covers a variety of topics including tourism, sport, health, nutrition, business and outdoor education. Flinders is amazing and I would highly recommend studying at Flinders. You will be supported throughout your studies and welcomed with open arms. The campus is beautiful and is a great space to study in (and the ducks are adorable). Flinders has a fun and inclusive atmosphere that just feels good. There are ample services available on campus.
The Bachelor of Sport, Health and Physical Activity is flexible, practical and provides you with the knowledge and skills in a range of different areas within the sports industry. There is a lot of scope within the degree to choose your career path and align the practical experiences you’ll have during your studies with that career path. The role I hold today at the SANFL came to fruition through the connections I made during my placement.
The Bachelor of Sport, Health and Physical Activity provides a broad academic pathway that can lead to opportunities from health through to business management. I initially wanted to learn about the human body and I knew I wanted a career in promotion of physical activity, although little did I know the degree would push me to pursue the business aspects of sport. Since graduating I have worked in the not for profit sector as a Sport Development Administrator, working with a range of athletes from novice to elite.
Studying the Bachelor of Sport, Health and Physical Activity I gained a diverse range of skills - everything from nutrition to human resource management and event management. I also enjoyed a range of exciting experiences, including a four week trip to India where I worked with AFL India to deliver sessions in remote communities, and delivered a school sports carnival for 300 primary school students through my placement with Basketball SA. Working on events in a large team environment is always a challenge but it proved a great opportunity to work with external stakeholders and put all the theory into practice.
I chose to study at Flinders because many of my teachers whom I idolised were Flinders graduates. I enjoyed amazing experiences studying outdoor education; a full day bushwalk at Kuitpo Forest, rock climbing at Morialta and a three day expedition at Deep Creek. Flinders teachers are high calibre and the teaching is industry relevant. The long-standing relationships Flinders has with schools has created many opportunities for pre-service teachers. The Flinders University Sports program has fuelled me with an excitement to teach students the value of physical activity, which extends far beyond the sporting arena.
Make the outdoors your classroom.
Responding to the increasing demand for outdoor education practitioners, this degree aims to provide you with an understanding of the significance of sport and physical activity within the context of a healthy lifestyle and to become an effective professional in outdoor education, sport and physical activity. With a Flinders’ Bachelor of Sport, Health and Physical Activity, you’ll gain the valuable experience and important skills needed to succeed in this ever-expanding field. You can specialise in Tourism, Management, Nutrition, Sports Performance Coaching, Disability or Outdoor Education, and combine courses to create a double degree.
