Moving from high school to university without knowing anyone else in my course was incredibly daunting at first. The Science and Engineering course structure provides orientation program which make meeting new people a breeze!
Studying at Flinders University has been incredibly rewarding and allowed me to grow into the scientist I am today.
During my studies, I was also lucky to present my research at a conference in New Orleans, USA which provided a great opportunity to network with other researchers and companies worldwide.
Flinders has a great variety of specialisations in science and by my second year I found out I was really passionate about microbiology.
In my degree, I was able to work with lots of lab groups in both biology and physical sciences, and I had the chance to go on multiple field trips all around Australia, working with all kinds of animals and plants.
My degree placement allowed me to gain exposure to the world of research through my placement at Australia’s premier research facility, CSIRO. This placement led me to the next phase of my career. Flinders employs some of the world’s most renowned hydro-geologists and I am able to network with some of the best brains in the field.
I chose to study at Flinders because of the extensive range of interesting topics offered. I knew it would benefit my career in environmental management. Flinders has become more than just a university for me and I’ve had the opportunity to make great friends and experience life in Adelaide.
Extracurricular activities at Flinders have helped me gain confidence and feel more prepared for my future and career. I have enjoyed the field trips for my course and have been able to volunteer for two of the Marine Biology and Aquaculture programs.
Flinders is really good because it offers a lot of freedom in your choice of electives. You have your core topics but you also get to pick and choose what you’d like to do.
The University does an excellent job at giving a balance between the theory and the practice, so you come out understanding the details of how things work and also how to do things in the lab.
Flinders is the only university in Australia to offer a dedicated undergraduate degree in Palaeontology, combining lab and field-based topics from Biological and Environmental Sciences, Archaeology and Visual Arts.
The Bachelor of Science (Palaeontology) will provide you with in-depth knowledge and appreciation of the Australian fossil record, and a broad-based foundation in the scientific principles underpinning palaeontology and allied disciplines.
Our students emerge with a deep understanding of life through time and space, particularly for Australian vertebrates and their environment.
