When it comes to landing a career in computer science, data science, information technology, engineering or scientific fields - practical experience is important, and practical placements can give you the edge you need to succeed.
Flinders’s WIL placements will improve your employability by helping you better understand the day-to-day skills employers in these areas are looking for, and by giving you the chance to gain real experience in a workplace environment, directly related to the degree you’re studying.
You might take on a 12 or 20-week work placement or internship with an industry leader, gain hands-on experience through field education, or get involved in projects with industry or community organisations.
Your practical, real-world WIL experience will help you gain the edge.
Learning direct from industry will supercharge your university experience, and help you take the step from theoretical knowledge to real life experience.
There are many advantages to undertaking a WIL experience:
One of Flinders Universities industry partners, SAGE Automation has been a long-time part of our student’s education. Hear from some of our Flinders’ students who have been placed with SAGE Automation and learn all about their fantastic experience.
Meet George Funnell
Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics) (Honours)
George Funnell spent 20 weeks working in SAGE's smart transport department - his first experience working with electronic engineering in industry. Keen to apply the knowledge he accrued at Flinders University to real-world applications, George was able to develop his practical skills by assisting engineers to solve real transport problems. He particularly enjoyed the project development stages, and seeing his work come to life. George is also now doing his honours project with SAGE.
Meet Maddison O’Toole
Bachelor of Engineering (Software) (Honours)
Maddisan O'Toole conducted her 20 week placement with SAGE's manufacturing team where she was tasked with developing the software integration for SAGE's new vertical storage lift. This allowed her to increase her software engineering knowledge and test her skills through building a software interface. During her 20 week placement Maddisan also won the Flinders University 'Most Outstanding Showcase Project' for Information Technology and Software Engineering!
Many Flinders WIL students have been employed by Flinders WIL partners, either in graduate programs or full-time employment. From government departments to not-for-profit and commercial organisations, there are many career opportunities for Flinders Engineering, Science and Information Technology students, and Flinders WIL program ensures our students graduate career-ready.

How Flinders helps you graduate work-ready
With the future workplace rapidly changing, it’s hard to predict what competencies and skill sets will be in demand. One way to cut through the uncertainty? Work with current industry.
I got to travel to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for my placement. It was terrific to get a chance to explore other countries and see the world during my degree! Getting to extend my network internationally and being able to experience the academic work culture helped me in deciding to pursue my PhD at Flinders, and I couldn’t have done it without the fantastic support from the CSE Placement team as well as the New Columbo Plan scholarship.
The knowledge and skills I gained from my placement at YUMBAH Kangaroo Island are irreplaceable. It is one thing to read out of a textbook and practice in theory how things should run, but within that week I believe I retained more information than within my topic. I learnt and fully understood how the water systems worked, what the specific needs the abalone had, the intensity and care the hatchery and nursery departments entailed.
I was lucky enough to go to Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto, Canada for my WIL. I’ve been able to live in another country - which in its own is a fantastic experience – and have also been able to gain a lot of value through the work placement itself. From this experience, I have grown more confident in my skills - particularly in managing time, problem solving, and team work as well as obtained a greater understanding of the process behind developing a product for commercial applications.
