Indigenous Student Scholarships

Access to Indigenous scholarships created opportunities for Ashum.

Ashum Owen is a proud Indigenous woman from the Narrunga, Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri nations. She grew up in different towns around Australia, eventually moving to Port Augusta in 2012. 

Ashum is her final year of studying a double degree of Behavioural Science (Psychology) and Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice at Flinders University. She has received two financial scholarships during her studies to relieve daily financial pressures and help maintain momentum to complete her double degree.

“I am passionate about mental health issues, the way our brain influences our actions and vice versa. I am also passionate about the injustices facing Indigenous people in the legal system.
My goal is to merge the knowledge and skills from both degrees to create a program targeting the major issues facing young Indigenous people - mental health and incarceration,” said Ashum.

“Receiving a two-year scholarship has relieved a lot of financial stress that comes within the territory of being a full-time student. It means that I can focus harder on my studies. I appreciate the assistance I have been awarded and have used the funds for textbooks and day-to-day costs of living.”

During her studies Ashum became a mentor to other Indigenous students through her role as a Law tutor within the Yungorrendi Student Engagement team at Flinders.

With a strong interest in both criminal and family law, Ashum hopes to practice law once she graduates this year.
