Scholarship recipient Ashley Goodman shares his story.
Each year the scholarship assists a student who is in financial need and has achieved a high academic merit in their first, or subsequent, year of study. It supports them to continue to learn and thrive as their degree progresses.
Ashley was inspired to study Medical Science at Flinders after observing the non-discriminatory nature of genetic diseases in friends and family members such as Motor Neuron Disease, bowel cancer and diabetes.
As a medical researcher, Ashley wants to improve the lives of others. He believes that through medical research he can manipulate the tiny, molecular aspects of disease in the hope of developing treatments that target the disease’s underlying mechanisms and improve the outcome for those who suffer from genetic diseases.
Currently in its 21st year the Heather Barnes Scholarship is funded through a donation made by the late Mrs Heather Barnes, BA ’75, to provide financial support to an undergraduate student enrolled in their second, or later year, of their course. Heather Barnes passed away in 2016, her friendship towards Flinders University and support of the students who attend here, will always be remembered.
Removing financial pressure through scholarships allows our students to focus on their study and complete their undergraduate degree, so that they can reach their personal career goals.
We need your support to continue to provide financial scholarships to students like Ashley. 100% of your donation will be directed towards supporting a Flinders University student in need.
"As the recipient of the Heather Barnes Scholarship, I have been able to pay for travel fares and equipment essential for my progress towards a scientific career.
This financial endorsement has given me the confidence to continue my studies and seek additional research opportunities, allowing me to contribute towards developing treatments for some of the cruellest diseases in Australia."
