Counting the cost of quality care

Health economics expert Professor Julie Ratcliffe is one of many health and care research leaders set to thrive in the new Flinders HMRB.

Expert health economist Professor Julie Ratcliffe has high hopes that the flagship Flinders Health and Medical Research Building (HMRB) will allow for a greater dedication to the study of better care for ageing Australians and other vulnerable populations.

Prof Ratcliffe leads a health and social care economics team with internationally recognised expertise in the measurement and valuation of quality of life in the health, aged care and disability sectors.

A Matthew Flinders Fellow and one of Australia’s most experienced health economists, Prof Ratcliffe leads the Health and Social Care Economics team from the Flinders Caring Futures Institute, Australia’s first fully dedicated research centre for the study of self-care and caring solutions.

"The Health and Social Care Economics team from the Caring Futures Institute are delighted to be moving into the new Health and Medical Research Building to be co-located with such a diverse array of talented Flinders researchers from a variety of disciplines,” she says.

“The excellent state-of-the-art facilities available in the new Health and Medical Research Building and the ease of access to this facility for patients, consumers and industry representatives will facilitate our current research collaborations.”

“It will also foster new partnerships with a variety of stakeholders across health and social care sectors.”

Prof Ratcliffe and her team of Caring Futures Institute researchers in 2021 developed and released industry and consumer-facing tools designed to measure and value the quality of life and the quality-of-care experience of aged care consumers.

Prof Ratcliffe, who has published more than 200 papers in peer reviewed journals and been chief investigator on over 50 multi-disciplinary research grants, also led two reports commissioned by the aged care Royal Commission.

Prof Ratcliffe and her team are currently leading and contributing to a variety of NHMRC, ARC and MRFF projects to drive the inclusivity of patients and consumers in economic evaluation.

This is intended to improve and maximise quality of life and ensure system sustainability across health, disability, and aged care sectors.

With almost 700 people expected to occupy the new Flinders Health and Medical Research Building, its presence will no doubt solidify Flinders’ reputation as leaders in medicine, health, and care.

Prof Ratcliffe says the team is looking forward to collaborating with health and medical researchers in the new space to help enhance health and quality of life for people throughout their life course by measuring and valuing costs and outcomes.

“We are particularly passionate about working with health and medical researchers in further developing the research we have led through MRFF and ARC funded projects focused on the measurement and valuation of quality of life for health economic evaluation,” she says.

“We are developing new methods to drive the inclusivity of younger people with mild to moderate intellectual impairment and older people with mild to moderate cognitive impairment and dementia in assessing quality of life outcomes from their own perspective.”
