End-of-life care essential to health and medical research

Flinders University's expertise in palliative care, death and dying will have a place in the FHRB, helping to bring end-of-life care to the fore.

The importance of palliative care to the health system will be brought to the fore when Flinders University’s specialist experts in palliative care, death and dying relocate to Flinders University’s new Health and Medical Building (HMRB).

About 20 dedicated researchers and staff from Flinders’ Research Centre for Palliative Care, Death and Dying (RePaDD) will be among the hundreds of health and care experts taking residence in the flagship research facility when it opens in Flinders Village, Bedford Park, in mid-2024.

Matthew Flinders Fellow and Director of RePaDD Professor Jennifer Tieman says relocating to the HMRB will help bring the importance of palliative care to the forefront and address the reality of ageing, caring, dying, and grieving for the health system and for the community.

“Bringing palliative care into the new Health and Medical Research Building acknowledges that health professionals and the health system is identifying and responding to the care needs for people coming to the end of life,” she says.

“This is integral to health care.”

Prof Tieman is behind world-leading studies in palliative care, grief and bereavement and leads a series of nationally recognised palliative care programs.

These programs investigate critical issues in providing palliative care across all settings and changing attitudes towards death and dying in the community.

RePaDD researchers also explore the role of digital innovation in supporting people’s end-of-life experiences, and ensure access to palliative care evidence and practice within the health and aged care systems.

The future work of RePaDD will seek to further empower Australians to access support when needed and to equip health professionals with the tools and knowledge required to deliver quality palliative care in all care settings.

“We are bringing new work into the HMRB looking at bereavement, patient-controlled analgesia (relief from pain), and digital translation for communities around ageing, caring, dying and grieving."

“The HMRB is a chance for us to connect and to power up our research," Prof Tieman says.

RePaDD has developed six national palliative care projects over the years, including CareSearch, palliAGED, End-of-Life Essentials, ELDAC, Dying2Learn and Flinders Filters.

Each of the projects include information and support resources such as education modules, toolkits and portals, to support health care professionals and the community in dealing with death and dying.

The CareSearch web portal includes practice information and resources for nurses, GPs and allied health professionals, as well as for patients facing end of life and their carers to assist them in planning and decision making.
