Meet our Vice-Chancellor Scholarship Recipients.

Hi, my name is Emily and I’m studying a Master of Nutrition and Dietetics online from Macau.

The main factor that motivates me in life is definitely passion – especially passion in nutrition education and to provide affordable nutritional advice and counselling services to people who are in need.

My career aspirations are to provide affordable nutritional services to the needy, to raise public health awareness in the nutrition related field and to create a healthy eating environment in the community.

The Flinders Vice-Chancellor Scholarship provides me an opportunity to pursue my education goals, allowing me to advance my nutritional and dietetics education. Ultimately making a difference in the nutrition field, and bringing a positive impact to the community.

Why study in Australia?

I want to study in Australia because the Australian education system has an impressive international reputation. It also offers a wide variety of courses and degrees; therefore, students can easily find what is right for them.

Furthermore, Australia is a beautiful country with a lot of things to explore. There are many beautiful landscapes, from rainforests to deserts, in addition to hosting a number of World Heritage sites such as the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland and the Sydney Opera House in New South Wales.

Australia is also a friendly and welcoming country as it is one of the most culturally diverse nations in the world, I can enjoy studying with friends from all over the world.

What will I do when I arrive in Adelaide?

Adelaide is a wonderful city in Australia, it has a perfect climate where you can immerse yourself in the dry heat, and enjoy winter days without having to worry about snowstorms and icy roads.

The city’s planned and spaced-layout provides a wonderful mixture between greenery and city life. Its high standard of living and the affordable cost of living makes this city very liveable for students. I most look forward to exploring the Flinders campus and meeting all the incredible staff and teachers – as well as all my peers.

The things from my culture that I am looking forward to sharing with other students are its unique fusion of the East-meets-West influences. As a former Portuguese colony, Macau is the only place where you can find Catholic churches metres away from ancient Chinese temples. The colonial buildings and remarkable architecture make Macau very photogenic.

Other than that, Macau is also famous for the own native Macanese cuisine, a blend of Portuguese and Chinese cooking, it offers a wide variety of ingredients and cooking methods which makes the food deliciously good.

What is your advice for students studying online, offshore?

Some of the advice I have for students studying online is to treat every online course as a real course, actively participate in all the lectures and tutorial discussions as if you are in the lecture hall.

It is hard at the beginning because of the lack of human interaction and the immediate response as in real conversation. However, once you have managed to do it, it will greatly enhance your learning experiences.

Moreover, do not be afraid to ask for help, the professors are very understanding and helpful as we are all going through the same situation. In addition, it is important to practice time management, create a schedule you are comfortable with to avoid cramming before tests and assignments.

It is also essential to create a regular study space, no matter it is your kitchen table or in your room, find an environment that works best for you and remember to keep this place clean and organised.

My favourite things

My hobbies are playing the piano, creating new recipes, baking and travelling. When I am not studying or working, I enjoy hiking, reading and spending time with family and friends. It helps to relieve stress and pressure.

Favourite book

The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Current project

The favourite project I am currently working on is starting a nutrition blog on social media. This is the first step in achieving my career goals – to promote nutrition health and raise public health awareness.

The platform allows me to apply the knowledge I have learned at school into real life practices. Providing trustworthy advice, mindful eating tips and easy, tasty recipes that anyone can make.

At the beginning of the journey, it was quite difficult. Enormous time and effort is needed to generate ideas, create and design an appealing and engaging layout. However, it is rewarding to read positive feedback from my audience.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why?

My superhero power would be the ability to fly, because I can fly around the city and go to places I would not normally go. It also gives me the opportunity to see the world from a different angle and enjoy the beauty of where I am living.
