SA Pathology Regional Scholarships

Description

It is recognised that students completing placements in rural or remote areas can encounter significant expenses. These Scholarships are intended to improve attraction and retention rates of Medical Scientists in diagnostic pathology laboratories in regional South Australia. This program will reduce the financial burden of regional work placements and enable Flinders University students to develop their skills and enjoy the experience of living in a regional South Australian community.

SA Pathology will fund a program comprising two scholarships for Flinders University students in their fourth year of the Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine) who are undertaking Professional Laboratory Placements with SA Pathology in a regional location. The scholarship program extends to beyond fourth year, with scholarship recipients being required to undertake a regional-bonded 12-month employment opportunity with SA Pathology.

This scholarship program is funded and managed by SA Pathology.

Benefits

This program will reduce the financial burden of regional work placements and enable Flinders University students to develop their skills and enjoy the experience of living in a regional South Australian community.

The value of each scholarship will be $2500 to be paid to the student in a single instalment at the start of the student’s regional placement period.

Two scholarships will be awarded under this program. One of the scholarships will be awarded in Semester 1 to a selected student, and the other in Semester 2 to another selected student.

In the event that the scholarship is not offered in Semester 1 of the calendar year, then two scholarships will be available in semester 2 of that year.

The scholarship will not be awarded if there are no suitable applicants. 

Eligibility

• Available only to full-time students in the fourth year of the Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine) at Flinders University who are not already scholarship holders.
• Scholarships are only available to students undertaking the Professional Practice in Medical Science component, MMED4013A/B (18-units) or MMED4014A/B (18-units) of the program in a regional placement as defined by the Australian Statistical Geography Standard Remoteness Areas 2-5. Not available for part-time (9-unit) placements.
• Scholarships are only available to Australian citizens, permanent residents, or permanent humanitarian visa holders, or students that hold a visa that will enable them to work in Australia for 12 months after graduating.

Selection Criteria

Selection of scholarship recipients will be undertaken by a panel that includes the Laboratory Medicine Program Coordinator (Flinders University); and/or the Placement Education Coordinator (Flinders University); the Regional Services Manager (SA Pathology); and/or the HR Consultant (SA Pathology) and will be based on academic merit and the following criteria:

• Demonstrated communication skills
• Vision for a career in Laboratory Medicine
• A commitment to professional involvement
• A capacity to act in an ambassadorial role in furthering the program
