Outstanding candidates are sought for a three-year PhD scholarship for full-time research on an Australian Research Council (ARC) funded research project “Social Exclusion in Adolescence: risks, assets, experiences & policy action". This ground-breaking project in social policy is a partnership between Flinders University, the University of Technology, Sydney, the University of NSW, and the University of Leeds, UK.
Comprehensive evidence demonstrates that a sizeable minority of young people experience marginalisation and disadvantage that impacts their longer term life chances. Existing research has not comprehensively examined relationships among the risks of exclusion that young people face, the assets that are mobilised to support their inclusion, their actual lived experiences, and outcomes that matter for their overall life chances. Notably, research has not examined how these relationships may change as young people develop through adolescence, or how they may vary between boys and girls. This gap in evidence is compounded by a lack of attention to young people’s own perspectives on social exclusion.
The PhD project should aim to address this concern by examining an aspect of social exclusion among young people (aged 8–17 years). The project could take advantage of existing large scale survey data or engage in in-depth qualitative research to produce evidence on young people’s experiences of exclusion, its longer term outcomes, and opportunities for interventions to improve outcomes. There will be opportunities for developing skills in both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Project leaders will welcome applications from a broad range of disciplines (eg., social sciences, public health, education, disability studies) that contribute to debates in social policy.
The PhD candidate will receive supervision from Professor Gerry Redmond, Professor Colin MacDougall (College of Medicine and Public Health) and Associate Professor Pammi Raghavendra (Collenge of Nursing and Health Sciences), with support of the external project team (Professor Fiona Brooks, UTS; Dr Jennifer Skattebol, UNSW; and Associate Professor Gill Main, University of Leeds) and other internal experts at Flinders.

Benefits and Tenure
The scholarship includes:

a stipend valued at $28,092* per annum (2020 rate) tax free (*increased annually by Consumer Price Index)

a Research Training Program Fee Offset to cover all tuition fees (applies only to domestic students).
The scholarship will be awarded for a maximum of three years. Recipients may be eligible for one six-month extension subject to application and consideration by the Scholarships Committee.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the award of this scholarship a student must:

be an Australian citizen; a New Zealand citizen or an Australian permanent resident at the closing date for applications; or an international student who meets the postgraduate entry requirements and the English proficiency levels set by Flinders University for international students at the time of application; and

be enrolled or be able to commence a research higher degree at Flinders University in Semester 2, 2020, or Semester 1, 2021; and
-
have completed a Bachelor degree with Second Class (Division A) Honours or above, or an equivalent level of academic attainment in a relevant field.
