Andrew Thyne Reid Scholarship
The Andrew Thyne Reid Scholarship has been established to encourage high-achieving pre-service Psychology and Social Work students to complete professional experience placements (PEPs) in rural and remote locations. The Program will support 10 students a year by providing a scholarship of $5,000 per recipient This is intended to cover accommodation, travel, living expenses, and other expenses associated with the placement. It will also provide some compensation for the loss of income and/or the expenses to maintain a home base in Adelaide.
Mental Health Pathways to Practice Program
Flinders University have been provided funding by the Commonwealth Department for Health and Aged Care to increase the mental health workforce by developing new placement opportunities across primary and private settings in a range of locations. As part of this project some students on select regional and remote placements with a non-acute mental health focus can access reimbursements for accommodation, relocation and travel expenses.
The Mental Health Pathways to Practice Program Pilot (MHPPP), powered by Flinders University, offers up to $35,000 funding per intern for employing organisations - covering onboarding, supervisor support, and relocation - while connecting aspiring psychologists with intensive, high-quality supervised placements to address critical psychology shortages in South Australia and the Northern Territory.
Domestic psychology students may be eligible to access accommodation while on placement; however, Flinders-managed accommodation is limited. Students are strongly encouraged to organise their own accommodation well in advance to ensure suitable arrangements are in place before placement begins.
Rental properties can be found through websites such as domain.com.au, realestate.com.au, myhome.com.au and view.com.au, as well as short-term accommodation platforms including booking.com and wotif.com. Shared housing options are available via flatmates.com.au, and student-focused accommodation may be accessed through Study Australia Accommodation or by contacting the University at rrhsa.accommodation@flinders.edu.au. Additional options include local real estate agents, long-term caravan park stays (16–18 weeks), or private rentals through personal and community networks.
Students will have contact with a local placement supervisor. It's important that students exchange contact details with their networks and stay in contact during emergencies.
Students are encouraged to make connections with other placement students by attending community events, sharing accommodation and by making an effort to build networks while on placement.
Be extra kind to yourself as you adjust, monitor your mood, and reach out for extra support if needed.
