As the first-choice provider of creative arts in SA, the Flinders creative arts program combines traditional conceptions of artistic excellence with contemporary notions of creative industry. It successfully balances creative arts and industry-ready training with the rigorous demands of a wider humanities-based education.
Flinders creative arts enjoys a world class reputation in research excellence as evidenced by the recent Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) rating of 4, recognising Flinders as the only non-Go8 university ‘Above World Class’ in Performing Arts and Creative Writing.
Our Visual Effects and Entertainment Design degree is world-class, having won The Rookies award for best digital illustration school in the world in 2017 and 2018.
An innovate centerpiece of the Flinders contribution to research in the creative arts is the AusStage project; the national database for research into live performance events for which Flinders is the lead institution.

With research activity currently ranked as ‘above world standard’*, historians and archaeologists at Flinders University investigate the recent and the much more distant past. Australian and South Australian history are key areas of focus, particularly war studies, humanitarianism and migration history. Expanding areas of strength include research on modern Europe, with the history of war and imperialism a focus for several Flinders’ history researchers, who currently hold three ARC Discovery Projects. The College is home to the 2017 and 2018 South Australian Historian of the Year.
In English literature, Flinders staff have excelled in publications relating to the Early Modern period, producing works dealing with satire and the history of emotions. Modern and contemporary English literature are also areas of interest, with researchers and postgraduate students devoted to creative writing working together in this discipline. Flinders researchers make substantial contributions to research in feminist criticism, to the study of comic and satirical modes of expression, and to new forms of literary communication, including digital and visual.
Flinders is continuing to enforce its strength in philosophy, particularly in analytical and continental areas. Focus lies in moral and political philosophy, where research also strengthens activities in other disciplines in the College, such as indigenous studies, women’s studies and sociology.

The College has long-standing strengths in sociology, geography, demography, criminology, women’s and gender studies.
Globally, our research canvasses themes such as international development, environmental governance, human rights and inequality. Locally and nationally, Flinders scholars address pressing issues such as domestic violence, abortion reform, social division and environmental degradation.
Sociologists at Flinders address issues pertaining to the increasing complexity of everyday lives. They extend theoretical and applied knowledge across the themes of non-normative constructions of relationships, gender and sexuality, the sociology of work and political sociology.
Human geography and development studies, too, are Social Science disciplines in which Flinders continues to contribute ground-breaking research with demonstrable impact in the developing world.
