Stafford Wulff Opportunity Scholarship in Paramedic Science
Two Flinders University paramedic graduates hope to create equity through a new scholarship that provides vital support for commencing paramedic students facing financial hardship.
Studying as a mature aged student, Stafford Wulff (BParamedicSc ’20) was the first in his family to attend university, a challenge he initially found daunting. At the beginning of his paramedic degree he also faced significant financial difficulties, with his partner going through chemotherapy and not being able to work, they struggled to make ends meet. Working two part time jobs, Stafford scraped together the money needed for his essential study costs.
“I received some money from Centrelink which helped me pay for textbooks, I borrowed money for a computer and I had my old work boots for prac tutorials and placements - as worn and uncomfortable as they were,” says Stafford.
Gabe Hicks and Stafford Wulff show their support for paramedic students
Stafford and fellow paramedic, 25-year-old Gabe Hicks (BParamedicSc ’16), have each donated $2,000 to establish a new scholarship to help new paramedic students overcome some of the financial challenges they both experienced at the beginning of their paramedic degree.
Over the next four years, the Stafford Wulff Opportunity Scholarship in Paramedic Science will provide two students each year with $500 to assist them with the essential costs associated with their studies such uniforms, fitness testing, vaccinations, and diagnostic equipment.
Stafford and Gabe hope the scholarship will relive acute financial pressures so that paramedic students can focus on their studies and grow into capable, compassionate and professional emergency workers.
“It would be easy to attribute my graduation as an achievement due to hard work and determination, but it was the support I received throughout my degree that enabled me to succeed,” says Gabe.
Paramedics deliver vital health and social care to a diverse range of people, with varied backgrounds throughout the community. With Stafford and Gabe, Flinders University believes our paramedic student cohort should also reflect this spectrum of diversity, while also displaying a commitment to achieving their best academically and providing the best possible care to their patients when they enter the profession.
If you share Stafford and Gabe’s commitment to equity and opportunity for our paramedic students, please donate to the scholarship so that even more students can receive this essential support.
“Donations of any size are welcomed with enthusiasm and all donations $2 and above are tax deductible,” says Stafford.
“By providing your support you will enable students to better focus their time and energy on their studies and help them on their way to becoming effective emergency responders, providing care in the community.”
