Qualification requirements

To apply for HDR entry, generally, you need a university degree including a postgraduate qualification with a significant research component. Entry criteria vary between HDR courses so you must check Admission requirements for your chosen degree:

• Doctor of Philosophy - you normally need to have completed a postgraduate qualification:  
  • of at least a year’s duration (full-time equivalent)
  • that is equivalent to an Australian Honours degree Class 1 or 2A (at least AQF level 8 or 9 and achieving at least Distinction overall in that qualification (75%)
  • that includes a research component of at least 6 months’ full-time study (normally a dissertation or thesis of at least 10,000 words) in which you achieved at least Distinction (75%) OR equivalent research experience such as a substantial first-author refereed publication.

In addition, international students must meet the required English language proficiency requirements for HDR candidature.

As part of your student visa requirements, you normally need to study full-time.
