A Thousand Journeys
The Helen Read Collection
25 November - 11 February 2017
Flinders University City Gallery
State Library of South Australia
North Terrace
Adelaide
Aboriginal art captured the heart and soul of Helen Read more than thirty years ago when she first worked with remote Indigenous artists and their communities.
Since then she has built a significant and substantial collection from Australia’s Top End representing diverse media and regional styles. Currently housed by Flinders University Museum of Art, the collection is a rich resource for teaching and learning. This exhibition, a travelogue of Read’s earliest trips out bush, reflects on the efflorescence of contemporary Aboriginal art practice and its Western reception during the 1990s, and its ongoing resonance in the present day.
