In 1984 South Australian artist Christine Goodwin premiered her highly acclaimed socio-political exhibition First Australian Expo of Panaceas at the Adelaide Festival.
Employing art, science and satire the show used humor to engage audiences with social, political and environmental issues. Cast as the self-appointed Managing Director of ‘PANACEA Research Laboratories’, Goodwin created tongue-in-cheek remedies for what she saw as Australia’s greatest ailments. Revisiting this exhibition some thirty-five years since its initial presentation, when challenges around migration, resources and the environment are more pressing than ever, Goodwin’s work artfully reflects legacies of the past that haunt the present.
Presented for South Australia’s History Festival 2019.
