CSE Biodiversity Facility

The CSE Biodiversity Facility provides support for teaching and research with a wide range of animals - primarily native species of reptiles, birds and fish. The animals are housed on campus for projects with an Ecology and Biodiversity conservation focus; such as

Conservation management of Pygmy Blue-tongues
Restoration genetics of endangered native fish
Reproductive strategies of Diamond Fire-tail Finches
Colouration in Clownfish and the intricacies of their relationship with their host anemone
Hands on training in animal husbandry and welfare

Our services

The Biodiversity Facility staff are here to assist in the day to day maintenance of the animals held in our facilities and to ensure all work undertaken complies with the approved animal ethics applications and associated legislation.

Our team can also provide assistance with:

Planning and delivery of your project

Sourcing animals and associated equipment and permits
Habitat planning and set up
Training in animal handling and husbandry techniques
Training and induction in Facility Use and all related documentation
- Standard Operating Procedures
- Animal monitoring
- Ethics applications, modifications and reporting
- Health monitoring and reporting adverse events.

Volunteering opportunities

There are opportunities to undertake work experience in our facility. A structured program has been developed covering the husbandry of our birds, reptiles and aquatic animals - including food nutrition and preparation, water quality management, clownfish breeding, health monitoring and general day to day care.
Only a limited number of places are available, the program is generally run as a 3 hour session per week, with a set day and time allocated and 1 semester time commitment expected.
