Where there is imagination there is innovation.
We have always used art to express ourselves. Our ancient ancestors etched recounts of their lives into rocks and recited tales over campfires.
Through creatives arts, we build an understanding of our own identity and of the world around us. Creative expression helps bring greater understanding to complex issues, brings awareness to otherwise invisible injustices and connects people through appreciation and shared points of view. The arts play a crucial role in social critique and are a powerful vehicle for social transformation.
Our researchers are engaged in work to grow the impact of the arts, support emerging artists and are engaged in work to advance the public value of imagination and creativity. By seeking practical solutions to the challenges of measuring the intrinsic value of nature and art, we hope to grow opportunities for creating and sharing art in Australia and around the world.
Are ticket sales and room nights a true reflection of the value of arts and culture? We are looking at a better way to measure cultural activities’ worth beyond these economic indicators as part of the Lab Adelaide research project.
With a more holistic way to value arts and communicate this value to governments and funders, our researchers are helping transform and grow cultural funding and the reach of cultural benefits.
Researchers:
Australia’s performing arts sector has contributed some of the most ambitious, innovative and memorable live performances. But until now, there was no formal record of Australia’s remarkable performing arts history.
Researchers have developed a comprehensive record and easy-to-access database to share this history. AusStage is an online resource with more than 370,000 records of Australian plays, musicals, venues, artists, arts organisations and exhibitions.
Researchers:
Romance fiction is a $1 billion industry, yet continues to be ignored and dismissed by critics as ‘trashy’ or trivial. This research considers race and gender in colonial historical fiction and looks at feminism in popular romance to build a better understanding of this genre.
This project explores new ways of writing romance literature, understanding the genre and challenging preconceptions with a feminist ethos.

Assemblage is Flinders University’s research centre for artistic enquiry and art creation.
It is the meeting point of art and science, health, technology, engineering, industry and community. We embrace new technologies and ambitious collaborations to dissolve perceived barriers between artforms, disciplines and areas of research to uncover boundless possibilities.
