Inequality

We all have a responsibility to speak up and speak out for equality.

Our research is driven by the knowledge that inequalities exist in all corners of the world but inspired by the belief that it doesn’t have to be that way.

A large focus of this theme is gender equality – a world where women and girls have the same access to education, health and wages. We know that when our girls thrive, our communities thrive.

We are also examining the impact of war and conflict on growing inequalities, investigating the complex damage done by colonial contact, fighting for reproductive justice, looking at the role of volunteers and humanitarian development, and uncovering the dynamics of violence in intimate relationships.

Through research, we are growing high impact knowledge to allow people, organisations and government to be leaders of change.

The power of humanity

Volunteer and non-profit organisations have had a major influence on world history and have helped shape Australian national identity.

Organisations like Australian Red Cross and Meals on Wheels continue to play a critical role in our society. Our research is interested in the role of voluntary organisations and the elements of inequality in war, conflict and humanitarian responses.

A woman’s body, a woman’s right

It was fifty years ago that the South Australian Parliament decriminalised abortion. However, today there are still serious obstructions to women’s access to abortion services – which are amplified in rural and remote settings.

The overwhelming majority of Australians support women’s right to access abortion services and our researchers are looking into how decriminalisation is only part of the solution for reproductive justice for women.

Development in Asia’s youngest nation

East Timor is the youngest country in Asia and it also has the most youthful population; with people under 35 years of age making up 74 per cent of the population.

And for future planning, the well-being of these young people needs to be at the centre of development policty agendas. Our researchers are looking at the history, cultural context and opportunities for this youthful population.
