Committed to our community
Flinders University offers a number of health, psychology, disability support, legal advice and nutritional services through our range of clinics and programs.
Our clinics and programs are open to the general public and provide valuable opportunities for students to gain professional practice in their chosen career, while our health and lifestyle programs give students real-life professional experience and support our research.
Flinders' services features a selection of research innovations that provide opportunities to drive ongoing improvements in professional and personal practices.
The Psychology Clinic provides a professional clinical space for Flinders' postgraduate (Masters and Clinical PhD) provisional psychologists to carry out assessments and therapy under the supervision of a registered clinical psychologist. It also serves as a research facility.
Media Smart is an evidence-based 8-lesson media literacy program for students in late primary school or early high school. It is suitable for teachers to use in a range of classes including English, study of society, home economics, physical education, pastoral care and home group. The program includes information on body image and eating disorders, detailed lesson plans and a workbook for students.
Flinders University services for eating disorders offers a 10-session cognitive behavioural treatment to improve symptoms of disordered eating, such as binge eating, purging, fasting, and preoccupation with weight and shape.
The Clinic offers treatment for posttraumatic stress reactions following traumatic experiences. We have a focus on researching and improving evidence-based therapies, with these largely cognitive-behavioural in nature. As therapy is typically offered free of charge, there is no payment made to participants. Depending on the trial, therapy typically involves between 10 – 15 sessions, either face-to-face at the Clinic, or at times, online. We see adults (and children, depending on therapist and project availability).
The program's primary focus is research, particularly into the evaluation of early intervention for children with autism. The Structured Program for Childhood Therapists Working with Children with Autism is the manualised version of the program and is now in use nationally and internationally. A partnership between research and service delivery has resulted in the Flinders Therapy House, a partnership with not-for-profit Inclusive Directions.
