Introduction to digital graphic design

This short course will introduce you to the tools and techniques used in digital graphic design.

Who should attend?

Anyone who is interested in creating digital graphic design elements such as posters, logos, book covers, social media assets. Anyone who is looking to add layout and typography to their existing skillset. 

  • Prerequisites: Basic computer knowledge. Access to Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator highly recommended.
  • Interests : Digital layout, digital art, graphic design, poster creation.

Course content

  • History of Graphic Design
  • Software solutions for Graphic design
  • Principles of Graphic Design layout
  • Colour theory
  • Use of typography
  • Shape and colour
  • Output for screen and print

Learning outcomes

Introduce students to the tools and techniques used in digital graphic design.

 

Assessment

This short course is project based. Throughout the course students will work on their own creative project. To make the most of this experience students are required to meet milestones in a timely manner and respond to feedback during the short course. At the end of each short course students are given an opportunity to present their final work.

    • Introduction to animation
    • Introduction to social media image and video publishing
    • Introduction to photo manipulation
  • Professional Certificate in Creativity or Professional Practice: Mix and match any four courses of your choice and gain a Professional Certificate in Creativity or Professional Practice.

Shane Bevin

As Lecturer in Digital Media, Shane combines many years of teaching and production experience to bring an industry focus to the delivery of curriculum.

Co-founder of Adelaide animation studio Monkeystack, Shane has spent over two decades working in all areas of digital media production. Shane is a flexible digital artist and producer with clients as varied as Nickelodeon, the ABC, Schneider Electric and others. He is a multi award winning practitioner with recognition of his work as director, art director and technical director.

Shane has experience in animation project management, render wrangling, 3d production, Virtual Reality production and software management. As the primary technical director at Monkeystack he completed animation pilots, digital games and numerous short films.

Jason Bevan

Jason is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and practitioner in Visual Effects, Postproduction, Animation and Film related courses.

Originally graduated with a degree in Animation, Jason was a stop frame and 2D animator before he developed a career in Postproduction, becoming a sought-after technical advisor for the Animation Industry in the South West of England and Wales. Jason has been a Course Leader in Visual Effects and associated subjects for over 2 decades.

He spent the last year working as an Associate Professor in Visual Effects at XJTLU in Suzhou, China, helping to set up a new State of the Art Film School before joining the VEED team at Flinders University in January.

Katie Cavanagh 

Katie Cavanagh grew up in Los Altos, California while Silicon Valley was still emerging as a digital hub.

She majored and completed Honours in English and also was a Sculpture Major for three years at North Adelaide School of Art. After graduating she worked as a Graphic Designer, Web Monkey, and Project Manager for TechWorks and TMP Worldwide. She currently lectures in 'hands-on' digital media topics where she happily frolics and explores the convergence and combination of text, design, image and meaning.

  • In the event that a course is cancelled or postponed for any reason by Flinders University a full refund will be available to all students.
  • In the event a participant cancels their participation in the course 14 calendar days before the commencement of teaching a full refund will be available.
  • In the event a participant cancels their participation in the course between 14 to 1 calendar day before the commence of teaching a 50% refund will be available.
  • In the event a participant cancels their participation on, or after, the day teaching commences all course fees will be forfeited.
