The Investigator Lecture is an important part of Flinders University’s public education program and our contribution towards the cultural life of South Australia. It is also the finale piece to the 13 week series of Fearless Conversations, our thought-provoking and inspiring live panel discussions examining a range of industries to showcase innovation, creativity and to create a fearless future for our state.

Professor Richard Bruggemann
Disability Advocate and SA State Recipient Senior Australian of the Year 2021
Richard was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Intellectual Disability Services Council (IDSC) a position he held from 1984 until 2006. On retirement from IDSC, he was appointed as Professorial Fellow in the Disability and Community Inclusion Unit of Flinders University where he developed and ran the Graduate Certificate in Disability Studies (Leadership). He also undertook a number of consultancies for the Commonwealth, South Australian and Victorian Governments including a review of the implementation of the Victorian Disability Act. In 2013, he was appointed as the Senior Practitioner in the South Australian Department of Communities and Social Inclusion to lead the work on the elimination of the use of restrictive practices. In 2015 he was appointed to the Intellectual Disability Reference Group of the National Disability Insurance Agency. In 2020, he was appointed as the COVID-19 Emergency Response Act Authorising Officer to ensure that the need for COVID safety for people who lacked capacity was balanced with regard for their rights. In that year he was also asked by the South Australian Government to join the special taskforce investigating the tragic death of Ann Marie Smith, who had been living with cerebral palsy. He was for 5 years the President of the National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect of SA (NAPCAN SA). In 2007 he was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the Australasian Society for the Study of Intellectual Disability. He is also the Patron of “Our Voice” a self-advocacy group for people with intellectual disabilities. He has also served on a number of boards including Minda, Interchange, The Community Re-entry Programme, The Seniors Information Service (Chair), South Australian Sporting and Recreation for Persons with Integration Difficulties (President),The South Australian Council on Intellectual Disability (Treasurer), Inclusion Australia (Treasurer). During his time at IDSC, he met almost 4500 people with intellectual disabilities and family members and witnessed within people with intellectual disability their grace, humility and forgiveness and within families their persistence, resilience and commitment to their sons and daughters. He is the Senior South Australian of 2021.
Professor Sally Robinson, Professor in Disability and Community Inclusion, Flinders University
Sally Robinson is Professor of Disability and Community Inclusion at Flinders University. She does research with children, young people and adults with disability about what helps them feel safe, well and happy at difficult times in their lives. Most of her work is done in teams that include people with disability as researchers as well as asking them for their views. She also works with governments and organisations about how to listen to the things that matter to disabled people.
Ms Tanya Hosch
Executive General Manager of Inclusion and Social Policy, AFL.
Tanya Hosch, is the Executive General Manager of Inclusion and Social Policy at the AFL. She has a long and distinguished history in policy, advocacy, & governance. Tanya is of Torres Strait Islander heritage, passionate about anti racism, and identifies as a feminist. Before joining the AFL, she was Joint Campaign Director of the Recognise movement for constitutional recognition. In May 2017, as a member of the Referendum Council she contributed to the development of The Statement from the Heart.
Commissioner Helen Connolly, South Australia Commissioner for Children and Young People
Helen Connolly became South Australia’s first Commissioner for Children and Young People in April 2017. The position was established under the Children and Young People (Oversight and Advocacy Bodies) Act 2016. The Commissioner promotes and advocates for the rights, development and wellbeing of all children and young people in South Australia, with a special focus to engage with and listen to children who aren’t usually heard. Helen has 30 years’ experience as a leader in human services. Throughout her career, Helen has taken an active advocacy role on the main policy issues that impact on the wellbeing of Australian families and children, with a strong focus on early intervention and prevention strategies.
