Jembatan is a brings Australian and Indonesian communities together to encourage cross-cultural exchange and understanding.
The initiative demonstrates Flinders University’s commitment to its close relationship with Indonesia, forged through over 50 years of strong research and teaching linkages.
Jembatan, or ‘bridge’ in Indonesian, represents the bridge we aim to build between Australia and Indonesia to strengthen people-to-people links. This is achieved through community and cultural events and educational programs.
Jembatan is committed to working with Indonesian and South Australian community groups, government agencies, education institutions and businesses to promote and strengthen South Australian engagement with Indonesia.
The Jembatan initiative was launched at the ninth International Convention for Asian Scholars in Adelaide in July 2015. It formed a cornerstone of Flinders University’s 50th Anniversary celebrations and demonstrates the University’s long standing commitment to its close relationship with Indonesia.
Jembatan works with Indonesian and South Australian government agencies, community organisations, educational institutions and businesses to:
These multi-disciplinary activities are realised with the generous support of Anton and Kadar Lucas.
It is a great honour to congratulate Flinders University for launching Jembatan as a Flinders 50th anniversary initiative and I have strongly confidence that Jembatan will help to deepen people-to-people links between South Australia and Indonesia. As I was involved in the early discussions to establish Jembatan and Rumah Budaya in Adelaide, therefore I would be very happy to do my best to support the works of Jembatan in years to come. Congratulations!
The Jembatan initiative promotes and supports Flinders’ disciplined-based Indonesian expertise and language capability.
Flinders offers courses in Indonesian language as part of a number of bachelor programs, and can also be taken alongside any other degree in a separate Diploma of Language.
Knowledge of the Indonesian language and the country’s culture, society, and history is an invaluable asset for graduates contemplating careers in government service, private business or teaching in Australia.
Emerging creative practitioners in the fields of Drama, Dance, Screen and Digital Media who are studying at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Institut Seni Indonesia, Flinders University and Adelaide College of the Arts (TAFE SA) will come together to produce a creative work which features dance, screen and performances. The aim of the work is to produce an inter-disciplinary and beautiful performance piece that explores the universal theme of happiness in a contemporary and international context that embraces cultural, religious and language differences.
Jembatan works in partnership with arts organisations and local community groups to engage the broader South Australian community in Indonesian cultural events.
Jembatan’s Indonesian language school outreach activities offer a variety of language and cultural workshops for reception to Year 12 students. Activities are offered in small groups and are developed and delivered by the Indonesian section within the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.
Flinders provides cultural and linguistic professional development programs for government and industry to support sustained and reciprocal relationships. Indonesia is the only south-east Asian member of the G20 with the largest economy and population in the region. Understanding the Indonesian business environment and cultural factors is key to developing strong working relationships.
