Reconciliation Action Plan

statement

FHMRI Research Education and Development (RED) Hub RED Hub Reconciliation Action Plan statement

RED Hub respects and recognises philosophies, knowledges, research, contributions and sovereignty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Australia, since time immemorial.

The FHMRI community commits to actively building understanding and acceptance of our shared histories, as we work towards a shared future. Importantly, the FHMRI community recognises the ongoing impacts of colonisation and is committed to reconciliation through our research.

The RED Hub will demonstrate ethical approaches with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to develop a culture of mutual trust, respect and reciprocity through the following:

  • Improve the ways in which all RED Hub students and researchers work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities. This includes a commitment to identifying and communicating their own standpoint including their biases, attitudes and assumptions, which impacts on all of the parts of the research process
  • Strengthen the research capabilities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples including staff, students and Communities
  • Incorporate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and knowledges (knowing, being and doing) into RED Hub research processes
  • Enhance the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as researchers, research partners, collaborators and participants in research
  • Ensure that FHMRI policies, practices, procedures and templates respect the sovereignty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and reflect their rights and interests.
  • Build respectful reciprocal relationships of trust with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander academics, organisations, communities and peoples.
  • Execute our research utilising the NHMRC best practices and AIATSIS code of ethics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research.

Acknowledgement of Country

Flinders University was established on the lands of the Kaurna nation, with the first University campus, Bedford Park, located on the ancestral body of Ngannu near Warriparinga. Warriparinga is a significant site in the complex and multi-layered Dreaming of the Kaurna ancestor, Tjilbruke. For the Kaurna nation, Tjilbruke was a keeper of the fire and a peace maker/law maker. Tjilbruke is part of the living culture and traditions of the Kaurna people. His spirit lives in the Land and Waters, in the Kaurna people and in the glossy ibis (known as Tjilbruke for the Kaurna). Through Tjilbruke, the Kaurna people continue their creative relationship with their Country, its spirituality and its stories.

Flinders University acknowledges the Traditional Owners and Custodians, both past and present, of the various locations the University operates on, and recognises their continued relationship and responsibility to these Lands and waters.
