“From being born in an extreme rural country side, where I had to walk many miles to reach the nearest school, to working as a journalist, reporting the emotional stories of war victims and suicide bombers, to studying at Flinders...”
I am from Sri Lanka, a war-torn country for thirty years ending in 2009. I was born during a civil uprising period against the government. In order to suppress the struggle, the government killed civilians who were suspected of having connections with the civil movement.
From being born in an extreme rural country side, where I had to walk many miles to reach the nearest school, to working as a journalist, reporting the emotional stories of war victims and suicide bombers, to studying at Flinders with hopes to get into Medicine programme, I hope to give a message to all South Australians – you all are gifted.
In a peaceful state like South Australia we are able to receive a world class education at an affordable cost. Never forget how lucky you all are. I wouldn’t have waited this long, if I had this opportunity in my country when I was your age.
Thank you
