An unjust society ends here
What advantages are some people are born with? And what forces outside an individual’s control set others back? Australian society, like many around the world, is not a level playing field for all members of our community.
We are interested in researching and understanding the role of governance and policy to restore equity, access and rights for all.
We know when more people can participate the whole community benefits.
Almost one in five young Australian’s go to bed or school hungry each day. And young people with a disability, young carers, Indigenous Australians and young people that live in remote and rural locations are more likely to go hungry than their counterparts.
These revelations, and more, from the Flinders University Australian Child Wellbeing Project are informing policymakers, service providers, schools and researchers and contributing to the design of more effective services to improve children’s wellbeing and development.
Researcher:
Indigenous Australians continue to comprise a disproportionate rate of the national prison population. Our researchers are looking at Indigenous Australians in custody for assault and offences against justice procedures – such as breaches of bail. These offences account for 40 per cent of South Australia’s Indigenous prisoners yet just 25 per cent for non-Indigenous prisoners.
We are focusing on key communities in South Australia and the Northern Territory to better understand the nature and potential causes of these offence specific incarceration rates.
