Protecting personal and national safety
In a digital-dependent world, a nation’s borders are no boundary for criminal networks. National security and personal safety are threatened by the sophisticated and destructive impacts of serious and organised crime.
Our research is looking at key areas of concern within organised crime including gun use, money laundering, cybercrime, identity theft, corruption and violence. We are bringing experts together and investing in new research methods to prevent organised crime.
Despite some of the strictest gun laws in the world, organised criminals in Australia still possess firearms. To learn more about how illegal guns are acquired within organised crime networks, criminologists and researchers are talking directly to convicted offenders.
Their research is also delving into the culture of gangs with an interest in how individuals could leave or avoid entering organised criminal syndicates. This research is influencing effective law enforcement and supporting social policies to reduce the impacts of crime in Australia.
