Career opportunities in gerontology are expanding rapidly with global ageing. Gerontologists work in a range of employment settings including aged care homes, community care and acute hospitals as well as local, state and federal government departments, policy and advocacy organisations, universities and the private sector. Nurses, physicians, allied health and non-clinicians from a range of professions will be able to use gerontological knowledge to inform policy, planning and practice.
Insights from gerontologists can provide companies in various fields a competitive edge and their specialised knowledge can help to better identify and respond to the needs of older adults, and address ageing stereotypes and misrepresentations. Especially exciting is the growth in entrepreneurial gerontology by which gerontologists are able to assess, identify, develop and offer programs, products and services to meet the unique and varied needs of older adults.

The masters program has been designed to provide you with flexibility, enabling you to formulate your studies in the area of gerontology to fit your professional needs/requirements. It allows you to undertake a masters by coursework and research project, and provides you with an opportunity to reflect critically on your practice in the light of current literature and the experience of other students and faculty. Topics cover areas such as introduction to social gerontology, introduction to clinical gerontology, psychological dimensions of ageing, and understanding literature for evidence-based practice.
Masters students have the opportunity to develop their skills through designing and conducting an investigation to answer a specific question or solve practice-based problems through an in-depth study project of an area of personal or professional interest. Students will build on research methods knowledge to execute an independent piece of work and by disseminating findings, may contribute new information or perspectives to current thinking in a related area of practice or study research component.
