Indigenous entry

We support the Commonwealth and Northern Territory Governments’ key priority to increase the participation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in medicine.

We are committed to equity and inclusiveness in the Doctor of Medicine. Flinders recognises and values the contribution that Indigenous knowledge and Indigenous doctors make to the health of our country. Our Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff teach you how to work safely and confidently in a multicultural society.

As an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicant you can choose from two pathways into the Doctor of Medicine.

If you have an undergraduate degree but do not have a valid GAMSAT score, you can apply for entry into the Indigenous Entry Stream (IES). Alternatively, if you do have a valid GAMSAT score you can apply for direct through the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Sub-quota.

Both pathways have different timelines and requirements. Please be aware that late applications are not accepted in either pathway.

Applications for 2022 IES close Monday 14 February 2022 (11.59pm ACDT)

Interviews will be held after 22 March 2022

Offers made for 2022 IES – Mid April 2022

Flinders University Extended Learning in Science commences on 9 May 2022

Preparation for Medicine Program commences on 8 August 2022

Offers to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) are made from late October 2022

Classes for MD commence February 2023

Indigenous Entry Stream

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants without a valid GAMSAT score are encouraged to apply for this pathway.

There is no minimum GPA requirement for entry to the MD through the IES, however, strong academic performance in the bachelor degree is an important indicator of the intellectual abilities necessary for success in the MD, and an overall GPA of 5.50 in this degree is considered a competitive minimum but is not required to apply.

Applicants must submit an application and provide all supporting documentation required for consideration. Applicants will be invited to attend an interview on the basis of their overall IES application and if successful, undertake a 4-5 week program. You will prepare for the MD by studying science and relevant skills through the:

Preparation for Medicine Program

This two-week intensive mid-year program is designed to:

teach you the foundation skills and knowledge you’ll need to study medicine
build a supportive cohort.

Flinders University Extended Learning in Science

You will undertake a 10-hour per week online course that covers chemistry, physics, biology and numeracy.

This starts before the Preparation for Medicine Program and continues after it finishes.

Indigenous sub-quota

Up to five places are reserved for eligible Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants who hold a valid GAMSAT score. A valid GAMSAT score must be from a sitting in the last two years with a minimum score of 50 in each section of the test.

Download the IES Application Guide. The guide will assist in determining the eligibility criteria and the application requirements.

Reading and understanding the guide forms part of the application process.

The Direct Application Guide is available to assist in the steps required to start and submit your application.

Before submitting your application by the deadline, you must upload all supporting documentation as per the requirements outlined in the IES Application Guide.
