At Flinders, there are multiple entry pathways you can study to become an accredited engineer, even if you:
Flinders engineering courses have a common first year which enables you to get a taste of engineering disciplines and delay your choice of specialisation until you have experienced engineering as a whole, or transfer between courses if you change your mind.
If you are unsure which pathway to choose, answer a series of simple questions (below) and our engineering pathway tool will help guide your decision.
If you have further questions, or prefer talking to a student advisor one-on-one, contact our prospective student team to discuss your career options, pathways, and course and entry requirements.
If you have completed SACE Mathematical Methods or SACE Specialist Mathematics or an equivalent IB subject and you have a competitive ATAR (over 75) then you are eligible for direct entry to one of our named engineering specialisations. The full list can be found here.
If you qualify for Direct Entry but don’t know which engineering specialisation to choose, then the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Flexible Entry pathway allows you to embark on the first-year of your engineering degree without choosing your specialisation. At the end of your first year you can transition to the second year of a named engineering specialisation of your choice without any loss of time.
If you have a competitive ATAR but studied a lower level of mathematics at high school, then the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - General Entry pathway provides a guaranteed entry pathway for students who have passed SACE Stage 2 General Mathematics or SACE Stage 1 Mathematics. The course includes additional study in mathematics and physics, enabling students to transfer into and complete any Flinders Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) specialisation in 4.5 years. As soon as you have caught up with the maths and physics you can transition to a named engineering specialisation of your choice.
The Bachelor of Engineering Science degree provides a pathway for students who have not studied mathematics or physics at high school. As well as being a strong engineering degree in its own right leading to a variety of careers in an engineering -related field, the course provides the foundations for further study in engineering. A Bachelor of Engineering Science graduate would typically receive over two years of credit in a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Electronic Systems and Security).
Flinders offers a variety of other pathways that can be found here. These include entry based on previous University or VET study, uniTEST, the School Recommendation Program, the Research Project B pathway and others.
Use your prior service in the Australian Defence Force as a pathway to a Flinders University degree. If you hold qualifications from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) you can apply for a wide range of undergraduate or postgraduate courses. View the range of admission pathways available to applicants holding recognised qualifications, or those applying based on work and life experience.
