THE ROAD TO A NEW CAREER
How to avoid the 'same old, same old' and head for success
It’s easy to keep doing the same thing you did yesterday, but it often means you’ll get the same results you got yesterday.
Inertia can affect us all. Once we start down a road, we keep going in the same direction. Every day it becomes easier as we start to learn all the road’s twists and turns. We discover how to navigate the bumps and settle into a long, cruisy drive.
The problem is sometimes travelling down that road becomes so easy we lose track of where we actually wanted to go.
Let’s say Alex left high school last year. Or perhaps the year before… hang on, was it really three years ago? Wow. When he first left Alex knew he wanted a career, not just a job. So, he planned to take a year, build up some cash in the job he’d had since he was 15, then start uni the following year.
Alex started down that road. Then the boss threw him some extra hours and suddenly he was making pretty good money. A full-time position opened up, so he decided to hang in a little longer to build up the bank of Alex. The work became easier, and when new part-timers needed a little help Alex took on supervising them.
But it was only for a while… couple of months, max. Three years ago.
Alex settled in and kept heading down the road, doing the same old, same old. And there’s nothing wrong with where Alex was heading, except that he didn’t really want to go there. He lost track of his career ambitions as it became easy to keep on cruising.
The same way you travel on a real road. Decide where you want to go, and make sure you take the right turns to get there.
We offer one-on-one appointments with our prospective student team to discuss career options, pathways, and course and entry requirements.
If your destination is a career, not a job, then furthering your education can help you get there. University is an important marker on the road but it may not be your starting point. Perhaps you need help deciding which course to take or how to balance your study with your work life. That’s understandable, it’s all part of the journey. Markers on your personal road map.
You don’t have to work it all out yourself. At Flinders, we have people whose job it is to help you start your uni journey. They know the road to a successful career and they know how to get you started on it.
Be brave. Don’t settle for same old, same old. Decide on your destination, and we’ll help you travel the road.
Tips, tricks and hacks for people who are looking to take their first steps into uni life.
