WHERE THERE'S A WIL THERE'S A WAY

Engineering is all about guesswork, gut instinct and a near-enough-is-good-enough attitude… said no one, ever.
Obviously, to be an engineer you need some serious attention to detail and some equally serious skills and knowledge. But, there’s something else that is incredibly important. Hands-on experience, which is what you’ll get with Flinders Work Integrated Learning (WIL).
When it comes to landing a job, Flinders’ WIL can give you the edge you need to succeed.
Work Integrated Learning will improve your employability by helping you better understand the day-to-day skills employers are looking for, and by giving you the chance to gain real-world experience in a workplace environment, directly related to the degree you’re studying.
You might take on a 20-week work placement or internship, gain hands-on experience through field education, or get involved in projects with industry or community organisations.
Your WIL experience will help you gain that edge, and the work-ready skills you’ll need to start a successful engineering career.
Flinders has a stack of experience when it comes to working with industry as part of our WIL program. Some of our partners include The Australian Rail Track Corporation, Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure, Medical Device Research Institute, Milford Industries, REDARC Electronics, Nanyang Polytechnic – Singapore, SAGE Automation, AZZO, SA Biomedical Engineering, Naval Group, Thales Group, Dassault Systèmes and Steriline Racing.
“I’m pleased at the way the WIL program is organised. It gives a bit of structure and support to the students as they launch into to the program. They’ve got to make it their own, but I think they feel as if they have a good support network back here at the university to help them if they run into any issues.”

Developing safe, secure and nutritious crops for the world is an ongoing challenge, and opportunities in the agricultural sector for graduates with scientific degrees will continue to arise as the expertise of researchers like Associate Professor Anderson uncover new ways to improve our crops.

Flinders’ 20-week WIL program allows students and businesses to get the most out of the experience. The extended placement allows time to tailor specific projects in order to add true value for both the student and the business, such as Taptu Pty Ltd. Managing Director Luca Gnezda has had great experiences with Flinders’ students.
“Every student we’ve taken on for WIL has either gone on to get a job with us, or we’ve helped get them interviews and built their networks so they can get their own jobs. Internally we’ve had 8 that we’ve employed”.
Luca Gnezda
Managing Director, Taptu Pty Ltd
Luca was particularly impressed with two students in particular, who have taken the next step with the company.
“I’ve actually brought them onto my company board. To give advice from a young person’s perspective so we can stay young, fresh and dynamic. We take input from a strategic perspective from young people”.
Your WIL experience is just one way that Flinders will help you go from learning to earning. Obviously, to be an engineer you need some serious attention to detail and some equally serious skills and knowledge. But, there’s something else that is incredibly important. Hands-on experience, which is what you’ll get with Flinders Work Integrated Learning (WIL).
Engineers apply science and ingenuity to real-world problems.
Our degrees are offered in close collaboration with industry, giving you specialist knowledge and an integrated ‘toolkit’ of skills that will enable you to meet the requirements of industry as it continues to change. They also include 20-week industry placements to ensure you are job ready.
If you haven’t quite got around to starting uni, there’s no need to wait until next year.
