Bachelor of Midwifery (Preregistration)

Provide midwifery care to women, babies, their families and communities.
Get equipped with the essential skills to provide high quality, safe and effective woman-centred care. With a focus on the principles of primary health care and continuity of care, you will develop an understanding of various midwifery models to enable you to apply theory and skills in your daily practice.

A range of programs with limited places may be available in public and private hospitals to assist graduate registered midwives in their first year of practice, with clinical rotations, preceptorship, and educational support throughout their progression.
Your degree is the first step towards a range of employment opportunities including registered midwife positions in settings such as:

- antenatal education
- community health
- private practice.

Professional accreditation/recognition
This degree is accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council. Graduates of this degree are eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as registered midwives.

Undertake 29 weeks of placement across the 3 year degree in public and private hospitals across metropolitan, rural and remote settings to expand your knowledge and skill base and put theory into practice.
In order to complete the degree, you will need to undertake compulsory clinical placements including but not limited to:
- DHS Aged Care Sector
- Working with Children Check and Vulnerable Person Employment Screening
- Police Check
- SA Tuberculosis Services Screen
- Immunisations
- Annual Influenza
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate
- Manual Handling
- Hand hygiene
- Infection Control
- Bloodsafe Clinical Transfusion Practice
- SA Health Electronic Medical Record training.
If you are unable to meet these requirements*, you will not be able to undertake your professional experience placement.

Study abroad
Opportunities are available for 3rd year midwifery students to undertake a 4 week placement in the Northern Territory working in remote health facilities partnering with local indigenous communities.
When international borders re-open there will be opportunities for 3rd year midwifery students to undertake short study trips in South East Asia.

Applicants can apply for this course using Year 12 qualifications, previous higher education study, TAFE/VET qualifications, or through adult entry (STAT/Foundation Studies/tertiary preparation course).

An annual subquota is available for applicants from rural and remote areas. To be considered for the rural and remote subquota applicants must apply to SATAC in the normal way.
Applicants must also, within 10 working days after submitting the SATAC application, submit a Statutory Declaration to SATAC which confirms that they have lived in non-metropolitan areas of Australia (Remoteness Classifications RA2 to RA5) for at least 5 consecutive years, or 10 years cumulatively, from birth (i.e. during any period of their life). A Statutory Declaration form can be downloaded here.
Applicants can check their eligibility in accordance with the definition above using the search tool at the Remoteness Area (RA) Locator site. Filter your search using the ASGS Remoteness Areas (2016) layer.
Before commencing study to become a registered nurse, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) requires you to demonstrate a high level of English language proficiency.
To do this, applicants must do one of the following:
- Declare English is your primary language and before the course start date, you will have satisfactorily completed at least six years of schooling in English in one of the following countries: Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, United States, Canada, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom. At least two of the six years must be at a secondary school level, OR
- Undertake an approved English language proficiency test no more than two years before the course start date and achieve specified minimum test results as indicated in the English language skills registration standard of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Example: minimum of Academic IELTS 7.0 overall and 7.0 in Writing, Speaking, Reading and Listening.
Acceptable tests are: IELTS (Academic), OET (Nursing), PTE (Academic),
OR - Declare you hold current registration as an enrolled nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency – Nursing and Midwifery (AHPRA).
When you graduate and apply for registration as a registered nurse in Australia, you will also need to meet the English language skills registration standard of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
The Inherent Course Requirements statement is designed to help prospective students make informed decisions about whether they will be in a position to complete the requirements of the Bachelor of Nursing and/or the Bachelor of Midwifery. If you don’t meet our English language entry requirements and need to improve your English language proficiency, you can do so through our approved English Language Instruction Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) providers.
This means that you can attend the required English language tuition at approved ELICOS providers and gain direct entry into university without an IELTS or TOEFL test.
If you don’t meet our academic entry requirements, you can still gain entry to Flinders University through academic pathways programs provided by the Flinders International Study Centre.
