Professional accreditation/recognition
Master of Social Work graduates are eligible for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). Students must have completed an accredited degree and also meet the AASW English language requirements.
What you will study
The program teaches you to research, analyse and articulate a framework for inclusive and ethical professional social work practice. You will develop the skills to identify the cultural context of various approaches and their relevance to specific situations and populations, and to delineate the connections between interpersonal practice, social policy and research. Topics cover areas such as social work with diverse populations, complexities in work with children and families, mental health through the life course, and trauma and resilience.
You will undertake two field placements totalling 500 hours each. Placements are usually offered over four days per week.
Placements are designed to provide you with learning opportunities in a range of practice settings, with varied practice methodologies and different client groups.
Field placements enable you to develop professional values, knowledge and skills and demonstrate your judgement and expertise.
You are required to receive a National Criminal History Check and Department for Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) screening and background checks, stating that you have successful clearances, in order to be eligible to undertake field placements. Students who do not receive DCSI clearances will not be able to complete their placement and therefore complete their degree. You are strongly advised to hold an Australian Driver’s Licence. Some placement agencies require students to receive vaccinations.
Entry requirements
Master of Social Work (Graduate Entry)
- Applicants must hold a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification in any discipline other than social work; and must also have completed the equivalent of one year full-time (36 units) of social science (as defined by the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia ie education, psychology, law, political science, history, accounting, economics, marketing, sociology, management, geography etc) topics.
- Applicants with less than a year of full-time study or who have no social science studies in their tertiary studies should apply for the Graduate Certificate in Society and the Individual (SATAC code 2GC144) to meet this requirement.
- As selection is based on academic merit, applicants who do not have a competitive Grade Point Average but meet the social science studies requirement may wish to complete a graduate certificate such as the Graduate Certificate in Trauma Response Practices (SATAC code 2GC163) or Graduate Certificate in Counselling Vulnerable Children and Young People (SATAC code 2GC140) as they will achieve a new GPA for consideration provided the course is completed in its entirety.

Master of Social Work (Qualified Social Worker Entry)
Applicants who have completed a Bachelor of Social Work recognised by the Australian Association of Social Work (AASW) or a qualification deemed equivalent by the University are eligible to apply for entry to the Master of Social Work (Qualified Social Worker Entry). Such applicants may be granted up to 36 units of credit. Applicants for the Master of Social Work (Qualified Social Worker Entry) must have completed either: an AASW-accredited Bachelor of Social Work Honours, or an AASW-accredited Bachelor of Social Work plus at least two years professional work experience (paid or volunteer) or equivalent.
Bachelor of Social Work (4 years)
The Bachelor of Social Work (4 years) (SATAC code 2BP008) is available to applicants that may have had their qualifications assessed as not equivalent to an AQF level bachelor degree. The course is also available to applicants that do not meet the GPA requirement for admission to the Master of Social Work. Selection is based on academic merit.
The Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work meets external Australian Association of Social Work (AASW) accreditation requirements. Both programs provide graduates with the necessary qualification to be eligible for membership to the AASW, and practice as social workers.
The Statement of Inherent Requirements is designed to help prospective students make informed decisions about whether they will be in a position to complete the requirements of either a Bachelor of Social Work or Master of Social Work. If you intend to enrol in either of these degrees look carefully at the inherent requirements to determine whether you will be able to meet them.
