This course is being offered to address the growing and everchanging issues in workplaces that work with people who experience trauma. Students will gain in-depth knowledge of trauma informed theory and practice and focus on fields of practice including family violence, working with children and young people, and supervision and leadership.
Flinders has developed this course with industry partners to respond to the growing need for employees to have knowledge in this space, with a significant emphasis on real-world case studies and current research.

This course is for students who have an undergraduate degree and wish to further develop their abilities and confidence to work with people who have experienced trauma. The Graduate Certificate in Trauma Responsive Practice is relevant for professionals including teachers, nurses, social workers, allied health professionals and also for youth and community workers working with people who have experienced trauma who aspire to increase their trauma informed knowledge and skills. The Graduate Certificate is not a pre-service pathway, however, this course provides opportunities for students to increase their expertise in this important practice area.
Topics covered include trauma and complexity, being trauma responsive, interventions with children and young people, family violence, abuse, and neglect, and supervision, and leadership in contexts of trauma.
The Graduate Certificate in Trauma Responsive Practice is delivered as a result of collaboration between researchers and practitioners who work with people who experience trauma. The course has a theoretical component but also has significant learning opportunities so that students can develop their trauma responsive practice skills. The Graduate Certificate is available for students studying online who will be able to engage in online seminars to develop practice skills. Students who choose to study on campus will have access to masterclasses to develop their practice skills in trauma responsive practice.
Applicants must normally hold an approved bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an approved tertiary institution. Approved degrees must be consistent with social and behavioural sciences that focus on individuals in society or systems.
The Dean of Education may under circumstances and subject to specific conditions be open to applications from practitioners with at least three years’ experience in working with people subject to trauma and who can demonstrate fitness for candidature.
