Are you finishing high school? The Bachelor of Public Administration is unique in South Australia and was developed after consultation with senior public sector leaders. As a high school leaver you will be able to immerse yourself in a course that equips graduates for a wide variety of roles in public administration and to work at the expanding interface between government, business and non-profit sectors.
Are you a current government employee? The Bachelor of Public Administration is ideal for upskilling public sector ‘rising stars’, and is perfect for the next generation of public sector leaders wanting to excel in their career and drive economic, social and political change. The flexible delivery modes allows you to continue to work while you study.
Have you graduated with a relevant TAFE/VET Diploma/Advanced Diploma? A TAFE/VET entry has been designed for people who have graduated with a TAFE/VET Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Management, Business, Government or related areas. Applicants who have completed such an award will receive credit amounting to half of the course requirements for the Bachelor of Public Administration – 1.5 years of credit.
The program is comprehensive but flexible. You will complete major sequences in both Management and Public Policy and acquire both specialist knowledge in policy areas that interest you – which might include the environment, economics, Indigenous affairs, welfare, education or foreign affairs – and generic workplace skills. No other Australian university offers this combination in a dedicated, name degree.
We recognise you’re busy, so our flexible delivery modes allows you to study and still have a work/life balance.
“As this course is available via distance education it is designed to fit into busy lives. Students can study online, at our Adelaide city campus or our main campus at Bedford Park, South Australia,” said Dr Cassandra Star, Associate Professor in Public Policy, Flinders University.
A wide range of our topics are available in distance and online modes. Increasingly, we are also offering topics as ‘intensives’. Currently, elective topic such as ‘Politics of the European Union’, and ‘Politics of the Internet’ are offered as week-long intensives.
The South Australian Parliamentary Internship has been operating at Flinders University for over 10 years and has seen more than 50 students undertake it in areas such as public policy, community engagement, federal/state relations and a wide range of political and policy related topics.
We also offer other internship and placement opportunities. For Honours students, you may get the opportunity to be placed in Cabinet Office to get first-hand experience of working for the State Premier. You can undertake our work placement topic, and some of our students have been placed in statutory agencies, government departments and NGOs where they have undertaken research projects, and had first-hand experience of working in the sector.
Students also have the opportunity to travel and gain experiences overseas. For some students, the Washington Internship is an option, or cross-institutional study at an overseas University.
