Hear from our students

The academic staff are incredibly supportive of students and are always willing to go that extra mile to help you achieve. All projects and topics are provided with fantastic resources, including field equipment, boating and diving gear and dedicated artefact, photography and computer labs.

The students themselves are active in the community, leading the Flinders Archaeology Society. The society organises social events and offers opportunities for students to gain practical experience. It is something every student should be a part of. Together with the supportive staff, range of resources and a positive community, archaeology is by far one of the best subjects to be involved in at Flinders University.

Kurt Bennett Master of Maritime Archaeology

Opportunities always come up for practical field work or workshops, even special guest lectures. I volunteered a week of my time in April 2016 to help a PhD student excavating the remains of a 19th century Irish settlement at Kapunda. To actually be in the field, digging, sifting and unearthing artefacts was an amazing experience and one I’ll never forget.

Megan Green Bachelor of Archaeology

I commenced the Bachelor of Archaeology at Flinders in 2016, and soon found that the degree breaks the archaeological stereotypes. It’s not about Egyptian tombs or Indiana Jones-esque relic-hunting antiquarians wearing smoking jackets and carrying trowels. Students will encounter topics and ideas which they may not expect to study in an archaeology degree such as the Archaeology of Modern Society, Archaeology of Art, and The Archaeological Imagination, which blend ancient and contemporary notions of culture and human behaviour.

Marc Fairhead Bachelor of Archaeology

Bachelor of International Tourism

Turn your vocation into a vacation with a Bachelor of International Tourism at Flinders. Develop a thorough global industry focus that sets you up for employment in a diverse industry. The degree covers issues in tourism and event development and planning, and investigates the approaches required to best respond to the opportunities and challenges of the global tourism and events industry.

The best thing about studying tourism at Flinders has been the opportunities it has granted me – the more you have under your belt while undertaking your degree, the better chance you have of getting ahead of the game and scoring an awesome job once you’ve graduated (or even before, if you’re lucky!).

Hands down the best opportunity has been a semester abroad on exchange in Calgary, Canada. It was a massive step out of my comfort zone, but you don’t get chances to grow unless you take those steps out. Moving to another country allows you to discover not only another beautiful place in the world, but yourself as well - and in my case I found my career aspirations thanks to the tourism topics that the University of Calgary offers. I came home with a whole new perspective of the world, my degree, my career and myself.

Amy Hobbs Bachelor of International Tourism

The tourism degree at Flinders University has many opportunities that get you out in the sector and learning both in a classroom and with industry leaders. My favourite elective would have to be the project I undertook with ‘Unleashed Travel’ in November/December 2017. I worked for 3 consecutive weeks on Mana Island in Fiji where I learnt industry skills and worked with Fiji’s industry leaders, all while having an absolute great time with school leavers from New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.
