Learning languages at Flinders has been a valuable and very positive experience. As a student, I have had the opportunity to embark on a language learning journey, assisted by incredibly professional mentors. Language classes are highly formative. In my Spanish studies, not only I have had the opportunity to learn the language; I have also had the chance of being exposed to a different cultural perspective.
Cultural understanding plays a major role for the development of communication and intercultural skills. This has allowed me to get into leadership positions within Flinders University and become a course representative for the Bachelor of Languages.
Lastly, throughout a variety of different placements I am undertaking within my area of interest, the Bachelor of Languages adequately prepares me for real-world employment.
Learning Indonesian at Flinders has been a great experience, the small class sizes helped in providing an engaging and productive language learning environment. With immersion days which connect students to the local Indonesian community and introduces us to aspects of Indonesian culture such as games, slang, the program is an amazing space to make new friends. I even got to go on exchange to Indonesia!
Studying Italian at Flinders University has not only given me the opportunity to develop my language use in small classes where I’ve easily made friends and enjoyed studying Italian across a wide range of topics, texts and films, but also enabled me to study overseas in Italy and broaden my horizon. The independence, critical thinking and cultural knowledge is a very employable skill, and the teachers at Flinders are passionate and knowledgeable and have made my learning experience incredibly thorough and enjoyable. I would encourage anyone interested in studying a language to pursue this at Flinders.
Being able to speak a second language and having the ability to understand other cultures is crucial for a career in international relations. Combining these areas will give you a set of skills highly valued in a variety of professional fields including diplomacy, business, social justice, human rights, immigration, interpreting and translating.
Learning a language and developing a deep understanding of other cultures will further set you apart and enhance your ability to find employment across the increasingly diverse and competitive tourism industry. Fluency in another language can boost your career potential, and is viewed as an invaluable asset within the global tourism industry.
For those who work in the legal sector, the ability to communicate in a second language, and to understand aspects of the culture of those language speakers, opens up new opportunities for employment. This can include working with these communities in Australia, or adding an international component to your choices.
