Flinders provides a variety of pathways for students who are thinking about studying to become teachers.

You might have already made your mind up about being a teacher, or perhaps you want to explore your options.

Whatever your situation, there’s an education pathway for you at Flinders.

Pathway options

Bachelor of Education – prepares you to teach early childhood, primary R-7 or secondary level.
Bachelor/Master of Teaching – direct entry five-year teaching qualification which prepares you to teach early childhood, primary R-7 or secondary level.
Conditional offer pathways – one-year pathway designed for students who want to gain entry into the Bachelor of Education.
Guaranteed entry pathways – complete a three-year Bachelor of Arts and gain a place in the two-year Master of Teaching degree.
Master of Teaching – available to those who have completed an undergraduate degree and want to teach.

Bachelor of Education double degrees

Most students who want to become teachers study a four-year Bachelor of Education double degree at Flinders. These degrees prepare you to teach at the early childhood, primary R-7 or secondary school levels and enable you to combine your study in education with a specialty area such as arts, disability studies, health sciences, science or languages.

The education double degrees available at Flinders are:

Bachelor/Master of Teaching double degrees

These are fully integrated direct entry Bachelor/Master of Teaching qualifications for high achievers. You will study Education topics from year one through to year five. These degrees prepare you to teach at the early childhood, primary R-7 or secondary school levels and enable you to combine your study in education with a specialty area such as arts, science or languages. In the final years you will study Masters level topics normally restricted to students in the Master of Education which will prepare you not only to teach in schools, but will also enhance your career and leadership opportunities by providing you with an understanding of educational theory, practice and policies.

Conditional offer pathways enable you to start your studies and then transition after a year to a double degree in primary R-7 or secondary schooling, provided you achieve the required standard.

Guaranteed entry pathways

If you think you might like to study teaching but are not sure yet, a guaranteed entry pathway into the Master of Teaching primary R-7 or secondary is available. This lets you study a three-year Bachelor of Arts first, and if you complete this degree to the required standard, you will be guaranteed a place in the two-year masters degree.

And if at any point you decide you no longer want to become a teacher, there’s no need to continue to the Master of Teaching – you can graduate with a Bachelor of Arts after three years.

If you think you might like to study teaching at some stage but want to explore another area first, the Master of Teaching is still available for study after you’ve completed your undergraduate degree.
