Flinders University Rural Health South Australia (formerly FURCS) provides educationally significant and rewarding experiences in rural medicine for students, including short term and longitudinal clinical placements in health services in each year of the medical degree.
Selected students have the opportunity to undertake their entire third year clinical curriculum in a rural community as part of the Parallel Rural Community Curriculum (PRCC).
While principally attached to a general practice, this longitudinal integrated learning occurs in facilities including hospitals, community outreach agencies, Aboriginal medical services, prisons and health centres in the following regions:
The remote communities of Katherine, Alice Springs and Nhulunbuy support the efforts of the Northern Territory Medical Program (NTMP).
Particular attention is paid to ensure that the learning opportunities in these regions reflect the local cultural and environmental context of the different communities, their health and wellness, and health care delivery systems.
Clinical experiences in the NT provide students with significant exposure to tropical medicine and Indigenous health issues.
First and second year NTMP students begin their engagement with these remote communities through the Remote Health Experience and Regional Community Week.
Third year students can spend six months or more in a remote location. Fourth year students can elect to undertake some of their core rotations and electives in Alice Springs and Nhulunbuy.
Based in suburban Adelaide, the Flinders Southern Adelaide Clinical School provides an opportunity for students to undertake their entire third year of clinical and academic curriculum in tertiary teaching hospitals and other health services.
Study and working abroad is a rewarding experience both professionally and personally. These activities provide you with the opportunity to expand your knowledge base and breadth of experience. In addition, they can challenge your own preconceptions and often encourage you to think and consider issues from different perspectives.
During our MD course, you will have the opportunity to seek placements elsewhere in Australia or around the world, including exchange opportunities through relationships with our partner institutions.
Opportunities exist for visiting medical students to undertake placements in South Australia and the Northern Territory across various speciality areas. These are available as four to eight week electives.
