I enjoyed the hands-on part of my engineering studies. Engineering courses at Flinders have a really good balance between the theoretical side and its application. That better prepares you for the real world.
I was exposed to a large variety of study areas within my degree, preparing me for a career in a variety of different industries. Being able to modify my degree to complete a yearlong industry placement has assisted me in obtaining a graduate position in my chosen field.
My honours project utilised the skills acquired throughout my degree and in collaboration with a team, I was able to build an autonomous robot as an entrant to the National Instruments Autonomous Robotics Competition in Sydney, where I was able to see the robot compete against Universities across Australia. This was a very rewarding experience and was a great opportunity to network with other people in the industry.
The whole engineering building at Tonsley is brand new so all teaching spaces, facilities, laboratories are all modern and easy to use and navigate. Our Civil Engineering class is a very small class which is good in a way as the lecturers can actually focus on every students. I have enjoyed all the laboratory experiments we did, such as mixing concrete using raw ingredients based on the assigned target concrete strength. Also part of the course is a 20-week work experience with an engineering company. All these aspects will definitely help and prepare us for the real world.
Civil Engineering is a large occupation employing 43,000 workers.
